is there a way you can restart the game from the start

if you don't mind me asking, are you compensated for the Steam version? This is a tremendous amount of work and I don't want someone to guilt you out of it just because you used AI art in the free version.

A perfect game

Surprisingly, the middle sister's name wasn't on the drop-down menu. So, I couldn't even finish the first level unfortunately. I'm playing the game on the browser.

her name is in the game :)
if you look up their brand in the browser
ROOT.
it will give you her actually name! :)

Nice!! I've been working on the game's tasks since your reply yesterday. I feel like it is a comprehension game, but the theme is quite intriguing.

I don't like that the words are too small. I wish there is a magnifying glass in the game, or the text size could be adjusted.

Edit: Finished the game! It was very enjoyable. I'm glad we have this meaningful ending. We need more games like this! I really liked the storytelling.

wow... im dumb huh.. XD hands down the best investigation/mystery game I have ever played!!

just finished the game. will def play it again once my brain cells get replenished lol

I've been playing for hours now, slowly unraveling the mysteries of the Roottree dynasty. This is absolutely brilliant! I think they're the most twisted game family I've encountered since the insanity of Rusty Lake, and I'm addicted.

Edit: I just finished! The storyline was expertly developed, the gameplay was challenging, and the ending was eminently satisfying. I'd love to see more like this!

I LOVED IT! I even went after the steam version (after finishing this one), but for some reason i can't run it (still searching for what might be causing it to be stuck at the "the Roottrees are loading..." screen). So, I'm very glad this free version is still available to play! ngl i became a little obsessed and played it trough the night lol

Verrrrry nice game! But for some reason I expected more stuff about Edward Clancy Roottree or be hired at the end or told more about the book Sam was working on.

WOW. I've been super curious about the Steam release since it came out (I would have bought it already if I wasn't extremely broke 👍) and I thought I might look for a demo.. only to find.. basically.. the entire game for free??? Damn well enough to hold me over. Cannot believe this free game with AI art is actually quite definitely in my Top 5 favorite games ever. I filled out the whole family tree in a couple of days. Unbelievably satisfying, this genre.. I want it to expand.. slowly.. This was so so so so brilliant, holy freaking crap.

I appreciate the kind words. If you ever do have the funds, I recommend checking the steam version out. It comes with a whole lot more gameplay in the form of a second mystery. (It's a smaller family tree but it usually takes people about as long to finish as the main game)

the text in the notes is too small

Trully one of the greatest games i´ve ever played, it kept me at the edge of my seat at every moment and it forced me to think. I need more games like these!

im completely stumped on which sister's pic is which.

Look closer at the fansite. What accessories are they known for? Who's known for wearing what?

Double Hint: Look for a piercing and a sweater.

(+1)

hi, do you think this would ever come to consoles?

(+1)

I'm not fully in charge of the Steam version (which would be the only one that could be ported) because it was made by a different developer. Even so I imagine it's unlikely.

The game is very heavily based around typing for "searching the internet" and highlighting text to make notes. While it is possible to bring up an onscreen keyboard all the time, using a controller to type has never really been a great solution.

it took me forever to finaly get it right but man was it worth it. Such a twisted family line

Hi. Enjoyed the game. Is the superior version on Steam a one-time purchase?

Yes. If you buy it you get it added to your Steam library and can download it whenever you'd like. It also comes with Roottreemania, a second mystery. (Though you have to complete the  main game on Steam for it to unlock)

Thank you. Going to order and play the Steam edition soon.

We need more games like this. Really cool to see what great storytelling can look like.

(+3)

Really cool and dinteresting, I am just too dumb for this XD

(+1)

I LOVE THIS!

SLEUTH! 10/10

Interesting. Would buy the superior version if it was sold here. I don't understand why you are only selling on Steam. I'm sure there must be a good reason that's just gone over my head.

I apologize for the confusion. I am not the developer of the Steam version, it is handled by a different person and publisher. I still highly recommend it if you are able, it is better in every way.

Ah, okay. Thank you so much for that clarification!

(+5)

i typed rootree and got so much sass thrown at me 😭

You actually get the same result for rooottre

Woww! This was such a fun and creative game. I absolutely love the portrait styles, even moreso than the Steam version. I solved most of it myself but was grateful for the walkthroughs online that hinted where to search next. The conspiracy theory bit was my favorite part to uncover and read lol.

(+3)

Pleaseeeee recommend some other games like this , i love it so much

(+2)

Wow! What an incredible game! I've definitely buying the Steam version once I have the chance! I do have to mention--that dial-up noise every time you boot up the computer? Classic. Now everyone born after the 90s will understand! XD

Definitely played this through practically nonstop and finished it up once I found out I was allowed to.  I haven't had a good brain-tickle like this for a while. Thanks so much for the engagement and keeping me invested! I can't wait to play the Steam version (and that pseudo-sequel!!)

How can I get a local version of this game? I can't seem to find a way to download it in Discord... When I play this game online, every time I choose to save and quit, my save file will be lost.

(1 edit) (+1)

I apologize, but the only versions of Roottrees still supported is the steam version. The itchio version will remain in the browser inefinitely as it was when I released it but the  itchio version is no longer hosted anywhere externally, nor will it receive any more updates.

You can download a working version from itch.io by installing the itch.io app which allows you to download working standalone versions of web apps (at least in theory - Unity can cause problems with its default settings! :( - however I can confirm it works for "The Roottrees are dead" as that is how I played it :)
